We were so charmed with him. A quiet man. A gardener, bringing slips of this, and cuttings of that as gifts. And she was besotted. Took him into her life completely. And then the turn, and the downward slide. Who could imagine such callous cruelty in a gardener?

I like the "callous cruelty" alliteration. Unfortunately, I can imagine it in gardeners, having seen how some of them love plants and hate anything that threatens said plants, includings neighbours' cats and dogs...
